262 of the 2nd.ultimo, I have the honour to forward the paper of particulers of the office of First Clerk in the Magistracy, and to furnish you with the following addition. al information with regard to the career and qualifica- tions of M.Melbourne. He was educated privately in Eng- land and abroad,went up to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, in 1887 and came down in 1892. lie was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1891. From 1892 to 1895 he read under Arthur Peez Esqre., Berrister, in Brisbane, Queensland, Aus- tralie. Since 1895 he has been in practice as a Rarris- ter in this Colony.

2. The candidates already in the service for the post were Mr.Grant, Assistant Master in Queen's College,who has read some law and who joined the service in 1899; Mr.d'Almeida e Castro ho joined the ser- vice in 1893 as Temporary Clerk in the Colonial Secret-

ery's Office, has been employed in the lend office and as a clerk in the Treasury till January 1898,"hen he "as ap- pointed 2nd.Clerk in the Supreme Court and Clerk to the

Puisne Judge; and Mr.J.M.Gutierrez,End.Clerk in the Colon- ial Secretary's Office.

It was not considered desirable

to transfer a master of Queen's College to this post,
